
The Gibbons Project...
works to expand what we know about slavery and its legacies at the University of Virginia, to continue identifying and connecting with living descendants, to developing digital humanities ensuring documentary accessibility, and to leading the Universities Studying Slavery consortium.
Mission
- Maintain UVA’s leadership in investigating slavery by identifying additional names of those enslaved at UVA and affiliated properties and connecting their histories to the present
- Make original archival materials accessible to a broader public through digital humanities
- Continue co-stewardship with DEC-UVA in support of their mission and vision by identifying and connecting with living descendants
- Continue to lead the Universities Studying Slavery consortium
- Consult and train other institutions on how to launch successful inclusive history projects
